Lessons from the Slow Lane of the Swimming Pool

February 25, 2023  Dr. Shelby

Holla!

This is your girl coming in from the slow lane of the pool.

It’s been about six weeks since I’ve done my swimming lessons and drills in order to accomplish my goal of being proficient in swimming.

If you are wondering why I haven’t learned to swim yet, check out my other blog: https://drshelbyaitcheson.com/overcome-your-fears/

To be honest there was a part of me that was dreading coming back… Because I know I’m gonna be quite humbled in the pool, and what I had gained in my training up until now will need to be re-trained in my body because it’s been a while since I’ve practiced.

However, as I was swimming, SO many interesting parallels of learning how to swim and coaching my clients came up and I wanted to share them with you.

Here’s what I saw…

Whenever you are trying to become a master at something, anything in the beginning, it can seem really challenging and frustrating and even FEEL like you’re not making any progress.

Aka feeling TOTALLY puffed after only 2 laps in the pool lol.

Know what I’m talking bout?

And it requires commitment & persistent dedication to gradually and incrementally build up your skill so you achieve the proficiency you desire.

There CAN be moments where you have exponential leaps in your abilities however, from my own experience, and what I’ve noticed is that for the most part, it’s the daily practice and daily incremental steps that lead to the compound change over time.

Boring right? lol

I see this all the time in my coaching practice.

Clients come to me to solve their biggest challenges and step into and fully *embody* the next level version of themselves…the person they see inside, yet haven’t quite been able to fully bring to life in the physical.

And what I notice is, those who consistently show up and do “the work”.

Get the results.

They master the fundamentals.

They close the skill gap.

They just KEEP. SHOWING. UP.

And what’s really cool is they also see the exponential jumps.

And if I’m really thinking about it, they probably have more of them,

Because they are ready.

Their new way of being has been ingrained into their

heart

mind

body

soul

and of course, nervous system 🙂

So if you are reading this,

and you are frustrated,

maybe you are feeling stuck,

or that your progress is slow

or maybe you perceive you haven’t made any progress at all

KEEP GOING.

Keep going back to the fundamentals that you KNOW work

Keep tuning in, your soul will NOT let you down

you will ALWAYS know the next best action to take

when you are aligned.

As for me, I still have a few laps left so I’ll see you soon
