Have you ever tried to stop a negative habit?
Or adopt a new positive habit?
And have had zero luck in sustaining it for a long period of time?
Maybe it’s going on a diet, or reducing sugar and alcohol.
Or maybe it’s exercising more, going out for walks on a regular basis.
Or maybe it’s trying to be less reactive with your children when they do things you don’t like.
Or maybe you just want to stop biting your nails….
Whatever it is, rest assured, you are not alone.
Almost everyone I know has had challenges changing their habits, in some form or another.
(whether they admit it or not 😉
And over the last 10 years I have spent a significant amount of time, money and energy to investigate why this is so.
First, I had to learn how the mind works and why it does what it does.
And when I became aware of this,
Changing and shifting my habits became easier so that I could create the life I desire.
Here are some things I learned about the mind, that you might find helpful too when trying to change your habits:
First, for every habit you have, negative or positive, there are unconscious benefits of continuing to do the action.
Yes, this is true. Otherwise – you wouldn’t have been able to sustain the action.
This can be a tricky one, because you may not be aware of the unconscious reasons or benefits you are getting from taking the action. This is true for all habits…including addiction, whether it is a micro addiction, or a full on one.
Here is where you would benefit from being really present when performing the action, AND asking yourself how this is beneficial for you. And continuing to ask yourself “how is this benefiting me” until you find *the* reason. You’ll know it when it comes up. It will be a visceral sense and feeling. It may even bring you tears.
Second, your mind is always trying to keep you safe, whether you are in literal danger or not.
Again, for most people trying to change a negative habit, one of the reasons you are likely doing the action is that in some way it might be psychologically trying to keep you safe.
Maybe safe from criticism,
Maybe safe from feeling emotions from old traumas, negative events and so on,
Or maybe you are subconsciously performing this action to belong or fit in.
These are the most basic needs we consciously or unconsciously strive for.
And when you become present to what your mind requires to “feel safe”,
You can provide it for yourself, very easily in fact.
And then you are no longer required to continue the action or habit you are trying to change.
Because you have already filled that need or requirement.
And third, one of the quickest ways to change your negative habits,
Is to get out of your head and get into your body.
We cannot solve a problem with the same mind that created the problem.
Most people live in their heads,
Completely oblivious and disconnected to what is going on inside of them,
They live in their programming that they downloaded from their parents, teachers and preachers in childhood while growing up.
Most people don’t even REALIZE this is so.
And they continue to think the same thoughts,
Believe the same outdated beliefs,
and experience the same feelings and emotions over and over again.
That they experienced when they were a child.
And the only efficient way to get out of this loop,
Out of this programming,
that keeps you stuck taking the same actions over and over again,
Is to get into your body,
and out of your head,
This is the gateway to lasting change. Promise.
